I have three window wells--two of them covered--that are full of trees and an unheated, glassed-in porch housing a lot of my more tender stock. The hardiest, the ones in the photo, just get mulched back behind the garage out of the wind. I don't remember ever losing anything back there.

I say the porch is unheated, but I do keep a frost-protection space heater in there, and I try to keep it above 34 degrees. My daughter's tortoise, Waldo, hibernates out there along with the trees.

Jerry--Bring on those photos!

UPDATE:

ALL, save one, of my trees survived winter and I think the one that didn't was on it's way out at the end of summer. It's leave were curling and crisping all through August and into Sept. By the time it went dormant it had only one or two leaves.

I've been pulling my trees out of their winter habitat back behind the garage for the past several days, and they all came through just fine--even the Japanese maple. In fact the evergreens--two procumbens, a San Jose juniper, two Scots pines and a Japanese black pine--look pumped up and ready to go.

Two weeks ago all the pots were still frozen solid under the mulch. St. Pats day is my traditional unmulching day, and it looks like things are right on schedule this year. A chilly 40 degrees today with an inch of rain.

Hellooooo spring!

Yeah, I've been watching the temps to see when things need to come up out of the root cellar and go back into outdoor bins. With the temps hitting 50 on some days, my rootcellar is getting to warm. But I have outdoor bins that I can store things in, though I just filled up half of one with a collecting trip last weekend. Sigh, they multiply so fast....

I presume we are speaking about 50d F. ?
As far as i am concerned this has been one of the mildest winters i have had.
It's just that certain trees need the cold, such as Scots pines, most local trees in my area are budding out but a couple of good frosts and wind will sort that out.
Ain't going to be happy until April arrives.

Yeah, we had some good days this weekend, but we'll be back to 40F / 4C temps again next week, with lows below freezing. I've been tempted to take out some of my hardy stuff, but I also have things that aren't cold hardy to my area. Those will stay in storage for another month. Spring has just been tempting us too much lately - I want it to be May.

At the moment i have 6 Ginkgo's that i grew from seed, + a dawn redwood and my Wisteria, all on a South facing window.
They are in my cold room no heating nothing, very cold but no wind or frost " a spare bedroom "
All are sprouting, so happy about that.
I have a large Ginkgo outside and it appears to be okay, i was worried about the roots as they have small buds? on them, this can be enough to take them through winter, no water required.
A severe frost can burst them, they are slow growing but no bugs go near them, don't ask, i ain't got a clue about that.
They have found fossils of them over a million years old and they have not changed one bit. Cheers
