Hay DR
You and your guy are welcome at the party. He has a cool trunk and what a nice color. Do you have a season for blooming there in Texas or is it all year long?
Good growing

Looking at your sight I'm sure you'll have no problem . I wish I could visit your place, but I doubt I'll ever get to your country.

Paul--It seems like in Texas they bloom best right about now, but they will bloom year around. The guy in the photo though is with me here in Kansas. I usually winter them in the basement with some fluorescent light. It's cool down there, of course, and they usually drop most of their leaves and wait patiently for spring. This year I tried this one in an exposed east-facing, second-story window.

Thumbs up

Nice looking trees. I have always been on the lookout for one, but they are as scarce as hens teeth in my area. When i do find one they are in the trop. section of a garden centre, but they cost an arm and a leg for a thing that looks like a pencil.
I have no idea how fast they grow, but i believe they like a deep pot and cool roots. So a bit of info. from you guys who actually grow them would be great. Cheers.

Sorry for showing my ignorance! But are these deciduous or semi deciduous?

Cheers,
Leigh.

Bougainvillea is sub-tropical, hardy to US Zone 9. They maintain foliage year around, unless they suffer a frost, in which case they will drop their leaves. It's not dormancy in the deciduous sense, and they will leaf out again or perhaps bloom right away.

In my basement it's too cool and the artificial light too dim to keep them growing vigorously, and they sort of go to sleep. During that time they drop a lot of their leaves. When I put them outside in May, they will jump right back into action.

My daughter left for college last fall, and I acquired her room which has a couple of nice sunny windows. I experimented with putting five bougies in that window. I have the bloomer that I posted, two others with very modest bloomage, and two that are putting on very unacceptable, long, leggy growth with large, flacid leaves. So much for my experiment. I think they're just as well off in the basement, except that it's sure nice to have the bloomer.

Prowler--I'm working on a thoughtful answer for you, so stand by. I hope Paul will chime in too.

Hi Prowler
I hope this link will work, as I am not sure how this should be done.
This is the most complete information that I have ever found about Bogies.
Good growing

Yes it did work, thank's for the link.
It appears to me from what i have read so far is they are much the same as a lot of other sort of vine plants/trees, except heat.
I will read it more to find out about them, the time diff. upsets me, it is 2:30 AM in the morning over here, and i have to be up in 5hrs time.
Again thanks for the link, i am off to my wigwam, will read the whole link later today. Cheers.
