I must be losing my marbles.
I somehow forgot to include the pic showing the reverse taper which, after all was the point of this thread and the main reason for my decision to condense the aerial roots in the first place. When viewed from the front, the first branch that forks out on the left made the trunk almost double the width at that point than it was at the bottom. One more try...before and after. Sheesh! Update.
My willow-leaf is doing well, so far. It lost a considerable amount of foliage from the brief-and-accidental exposure to icy winds, but it's replacing them nicely. And four new aerials have grown out far enough to reach the polyethylene sleeve and be visible! One new aerial that had already sprouted, almost at the soil line, has wound its way upward, just under the polyethylene, almost to the top of the sphag ball. One nonconformist in every bunch! ![]() Sorry, but my camera just isn't good enough to get decent pictures of the new roots. ![]()

New aerials continue to appear in the sphagnum ball.
I'm cautiously optimistic that by mid-summer they will be well enough developed that I'll be able to repot the tree without losing any of them.
