Airport Bougie 2
Howzit all,
This is the second bougainvillea I got from the Kahului airport's greenhouse. I just potted it up today in a Tokoname pot. It's coming along nicely but would like to hear any suggestions y'all might have. A Hui Hou, -Tim ![]() |

I think it's looking great Tim. What is the time frame from when you got it until the last picture? Also how much root did you take off to get it into the pot? I have heard bougies have sensitive root systems, have you found this to be true?

It took four months to where it is now. I could have waited a little longer but that Tokoname pot was smiling at me to pot it up. I took off about half of the root system to get it in the pot. In my experience I don't find it to be that sensitive. To me there almost like figs. I also use rooting hormone before I pot it up. Take a look at this purple bougie that I collected three weeks ago. I had root pruned and soaked it in humic acid and superthrive and then put rooting hormone and now it's sprouting new shoots. A Hui Hou, -Tim ![]() |

Your bougie stump reminds me of the purple bougies that Dan Robinson brought back from Hawaii for a carving workshop in November at the GSBF convention. He said he brought the stumps back and rooted them in damp sand in a greenhouse (he lives in the Pacific Northwest). Are there lots of bougie stumps around for digging up there? Do they have big stumps like that in the nurserys?

Actually, bougainvilleas grow as a shrub not as a stump. The reason why there base is so large is that they have been growing wild in the ground for a long time. That's the only way you can get them that large. You can try in a pot or a grow box but it will be faster if you put then in the ground. They grow wild on Maui so you can pick and choose. You won't find them that size in any nurseries. It would take to long to grow that big.
