Mark, I would contact the closest bonsai club and ask someone there for advice. They're familiar with your local growing conditions, and when's the best time to do what.

I may be wrong, but I have the impression that in So. CA you can collect in the fall almost as easily as in spring.

Do you have a new home ready for the turtle?

Yes, i think i will be collecting this in the fall. You would not believe how intricate the branches are! I will need a rather large container dont you think? Any ideas? large grow boxes seem to be pretty pricy

And yes the turtle has a a fiberglass rock cave

If you are at all handy with woodworking a grow box is easy to build.

I build mine from 1" X 6" rough cut, white cedar planks. Leaving agps between the one that make up the bottom, then I line it with fiberglass screening and add blocks to each corner and the centre for support and drainage. They cost me about 20.00$US each to build. I find they last quite a few years and can be re-used.

The nice thing about building your own is that it allows them to be built to the size you need without having to over-prune the roots to make them fit existing dimentions.
