Thank you for your observations Travis. It does seem that it is evocative in appearance.
It is however what I have observed also.
I beleive Marco Invernizzi will have also seen this as he has in the issue of Bonsai focus latest Jan-Feb 2008 he actually styles.
A juniper in a very similar style. It grows all the way up then all the way down.
Using our imagination. We can see a tree growing up then the forces of nature go to work.
Strong forces snapping the top off then what is left surviving. Pup

Pup,

I like this tree a lot. But I think the foliage pads are too thick vertically. The apex is too pointed and high, and it conflicts with the horizontal spread of the branches.

I think it would look better if the pads wer flatter and not so thick and the apex mimic-ing the branches in that way.

Here is what I envision (although badly done)..........
