Joining a club is probably the best thing you could do in this hobby. I only wish I had your dilemma.

Growing from seed

I must admit that when I first started creating bonsai I spent most of my time making large trees smaller. Now that Im old, I grow mainly from seed. the pics below are this years growth from seeds planted in Oct, its amazing to watch the different shapes and sizes that occur due to smaller/larger pots. I dont know about anybody else but I use the fridge method to get the seeds to wake up, they get to germinate in organic compost, mainly bark, then as soon as they have their first 2 first leaves I eliminate the tap root completely and pot into their future home in well draining potting mix . Todays seeds are tomorrows bonsai, and we all know time is nothing when growing
"One pic is of a 6 year old tree still in its original pot beside what is a tree less than 6 months old,in all the other pics the saplings are the same age".

P.S. The stones you see are what I had the seeds in when they went in the fridge just 16 weeks ago, we have had days over 40c and nights in the 30s so I use the stones as a way of slowing down the drying out process as they are in the full sun but very young babies and moss is slower to grow than trees
Regards
Eric

I agree wholeheartedly. I drive on average of two hours one-way to go to bonsai club meetings since I don't have any club in my home town. Now, I believe that you're young and that is probably not feasable for you, but clubs are invaluable resources. First off, you can bring your own trees and get direct one-on-one advice on them. Whenever a newbie brings a new tree to a meeting, the old hands all gather 'round and talk the new person's ear off about their tree. Second - its folks who you can talk to about bonsai - bonsai chat is nice, but nothing beats talking to other real people about the art of bonsai. Hearing their tips, seeing their trees. Getting direct advice about your specific local climate and native trees.

I fill it with sand and placed my seeds in it and kept it moist. I had to pretty much water it twice a day for the sand is free draining and drys out quickly. After a week or so the seeds start to sprout. I wait until the seedlings start to show a redish color in the stem then I transplant into pond baskets. But before I transplant them I cut the roots and stem to about 1/4 to 1/2 inch from the top, then dip in hormones and plant. This will create roots closer to the top and more of them. I know that starting trees from seed is a process that takes a few years but with black pine you can have a very nice tree in about 5 years.

I actually did that just around three weeks ago. Sure enough, after only 3 weeks the seeds are all starting to sprout, and a few of them are already an inch in height. I have to water it every couple days though not everyday but they are staying moist. It is really exciting. I am glad I asked you all and didn't use peat disks.

Great for you. I find seeds interesting as you can discard the weak one and find the fast growing species. Bonsai from seeds is the longest road, but so rewarding. This is why, I do bonsai, and do plant seeds also. In long run, ill have tree of my own.

Remember, bonsai seeds doesnt exist. Only tree seeds do.

Considering the site you have in your signature I'm certainly glad you pointed that out! If you were touting "bonsai seeds" for sale I would have thrown temper tantrum!

I have written a few pages on the subject, but bonsai seeds is the keyword that bring the more traffic to my site.

We sell tree seeds of species preferred, see suitable, for bonsai.

See this page on our site:

Bonsai seeds : Tree seeds by Misho bonsai

The other page that brings me traffic is here:

http://bonsaisite.com/seeds.html

I state that bonsai seeds do not exist and explain it.

But, I do get alot of question about my seeds. Like, how much time will it take to reach a bonsai size ? Or, where can I find real tree seeds because you only sell bonsai seeds. I make it a duty to form everyone who ask.

I well understand your reasoning as for using "bonsai seeds" as far as a search engine or SEO goes for bringing one to your site. I was actually just joking around as there are many new to bonsai who actually believe there is such a thing! Yes, I looked into your site and you explained it all quite succinctly and I give you credit for doing so.

By the way.....welcome aboard BonsaiCHAT!
