Trunk choppin

Well the best time to trunk chop a Maple is within the first week after the leaves fall.
But don't forget to leave enough trunk in case you get die back, but to try and prevent that happening, use a little cut paste, or even cheaper, use Petroleum jelly to cover the wound.
Leave the tree for at least a year to recover before any more work is done.

This is my Maple, after a years rest and cutting of unwanted branches, still covered in PJ

I will get a better photo, not use to using uploading system.

Best regards BD Paul

I am now waiting until spring to re pot it, and see where the final height is going to be, with moving a new leader into place.

Best regards BD Paul

Trunk chopping

I look forward to reading how you got on with the trunk chop, but take care as some of these maples are grafted.
And if you cut below the graft, you will have a totally different Maple to what you have now.
I was lucky in as much as my Maple was not from grafted stock.
When you do the chop, don't forget to leave it back bud, and do its own thing for around a year.

Best regards BD Paul
