I'm growing two Boxwoods in pond baskets for about two years now and also two small Azalea's. Forgot where I read about this but supposedly it can help in faster and better root growth. Like said....supposedly. Either way it certainly can't hurt albeit in the summer they need to be watered much more frequently for obvious reasons.

It is based on the theory that the holes will cause the air to 'Air prune' the roots, creating a very fibrous root system, there are very large containers available on the commercial side of tree production that are an Australian invention that do the same thing, Hillier tree nurseries use them a lot, they gave me one, but I didn't have anything big enough that needed a fibrous root system, so I just put a large Taxus I dug up in it lmao.

An update please.
Has it improved thing's? I know it works in a pond, fresh water flowing through it, rather than sitting in a pot of mud. So a bit of input on how things are going. Cheers.

Well it hasn't been in there for long and its not warm enough here to put it outside full time yet. There really hasn't been a change yet but it hasn't died so thats good. I'll post an update in spring when it starts to grow.

This is more like a hydroponic thing, nothing, wrong with that. but you will have to sort out yer watering and feeding issues. Once that is sorted out, you will be well on yer way. Cheers.

I use pond baskets a lot when I've collected material from the wild, I think they make great initial training boxes. I've never tried a ficus in one perse, but I don't think they'd be much different that the deciduous that I have in them.
