The buds started to turn green today so I decided to pot it up in a pond basket. It's being kept in my garage for now until it gets warmer.

Constant.
Ain't to sure if you have jumped the gun a bit.
Dose it have what we call shaving brushes on it? or just buds.
The best time is when it is just a brown stick.
On saying that, i just chop when needed, i just follow what happens to my local trees.
Okay they ain't Bonsai but have been here a lot longer than i have. Cheers.
PS.
The rules are not written in stone, what works for you may not work anywhere else.

I'm a little confused as to what you are saying. On some of the buds the little green brushes are beginning to appear so I figured it was time to pot. I keep it in my garage which does not freeze at night and I have no doubt that it will be fine.

Larch prefer it if you repot them just before the shaving brushes appear, but after the buds start to swell, this can literally be a period of just a day, This isn't set in stone like Prowler said, so doing it after the leaves have shown may not have a negative affect, but it is widely believed to be the truth.

I did not meen to confuse you.
Its just that if a tree is wakening up, it is trying to adjust itself to the weather and they have anough to contend with withought a repot as well. Cheers.

This tree has been outside all winter nestled up close to the house semi protected from weather. I've watched it closely all winter long and today I had noticed that only on a few buds I could just start to see the beginnings of the shaving brushes. By no means are they all the way open. I chopped and repotted this one last year after purchase with the leaves in full shaving brush form and it has done great. I guess they are just resilient in my climate.

Prowler, the only reason I was confused was when you jumped to saying when you like to chop. I understand they have a lot to contend with in regards to the weather. I'm confident with my repotting skills. I have only lost one tree so far due to repotting and that was because it was early summer and I removed way too many roots. I knew that one would die as well. It was my sorry attempt to enter the styling contest.

Thanks for the input guys.
