Youpon Holly

After trimming off dead branches, plucking discolored leaves, and trimming back the root ball I've finally finished repotting my holly by dressing it up with some pea body river rock. I let it breathe for a couple of days before doing this to make sure my pot was draining well, as it's much easier for me to see the roots and make adjustments to the tree if there isn't anything covering up the soil.

I've attached a couple of pictures of the tree to show the end results, and now I've turned my thoughts towards styling. I will be waiting until the beginning of July to do anything else to the tree - as I'm sure it needs some time to recoup. I'm not really sure where to go with this tree, so does anyone have any ideas?

I've never done a root over rock bonsai before, and I think I might try it with this tree. It has some nice trunk movement and mighty thick roots for such a little plant.

I like the movement in the lower trunk. I would use that as a theme, if you will, for styling the rest of the tree. You may be able to develop this into something exceptional.

But may I ask why it's indoors? This needs to be outside, if at all possible. I'd keep it out of direct sun for the next several weeks, while it recovers from repotting. But it will do better outside than inside, even so.

Bad thunderstorms have been rolling through the area the past couple of weeks, it would have literally achieved lift off if left outside. It is currently on my porch at the moment with a couple of bags of mulch forming up as wind breakers for it for now.

I think some of your thunderstorms took a wrong turn last nite and ended up in northern IN. It was quite a show for a while!

Fortunately, nothing was damaged, or blown away. Tho we could hear my "squirrel scarers" (set, unbaited mousetraps) going off in the heavy rain.
