earth worms
Just got my first tree, japanese maple, that I hope to make a bonsai with.
I'm going for the "root over rock" look. I've already attached to the rock and repotted in larger pot. We all know that the roots need air, would it beneficial to add some earth worms, the type you go fishing with, to the soil to add more aeration? |

Nope, worms aren't needed if you planted it into proper loose, quick draining bonsai soil.
Sadly I don't think oxygen getting to the roots will be your problem. This is the wrong time of year to repot a maple into root over rock. That's a lot of root stress and coupled with heat stress of summer, well I hope it makes it without loosing branches or the whole tree. Fingers crossed. Mary B. |

I don't think so. Worms eat decomposing organic matter so unless your tree has root rot, they shouldn't be interested. I've had worms get into my pots that are on the ground for long periods of time. I just wash them out when I repotted into smaller pots and fresh bonsai soil.
