New Aquisition

My eldest son found this stone at Waratah Bay in south Victoria and presented me with it. It has a flat base and I gave it a coat of veg. oil to enhance its jet black appearance.

Nice present Ash, and nice display.

One thing, if you are going to use oil on a stone (some purists would be shocked), I would suggest mineral oil as organic oils go rancid. They also get sticky as they dry trapping dust on the surface of the stone.

Thanks for the heads up on that Jim. I will start the cleaning process immediately. Should try to take better pics too as the mountain rivers need better emphasis.

New aquisition

I have to say that i personally don't like the idea of putting oil on a stone like that, but thats just my opinion.
Better to see the natural beauty come out, maybe a closer photo of the stone?.

Best regards BD Paul

Think I got that covered (or uncovered) no more oil for this guy. I will try and get fresh pics soon and a better one of the stone on the left. (in avatar)

I've looked into the real deal of what one does to prepare suiseki for exhibition and easily saw that I would not live that long!
So as a compromise, I discovered a wax that can be put on a stone ( and easily removed) that holds the colors just like when i found the rocks underwater in a local stream. Pure stoners will be horrified, but I find the method to fill my need. I apply the wax by hand, then brush in with toothbrush, then give it a sheen with a shoe brush.
So you don't have to ask, the taki-ishi (waterfall stone) was found in British columbia , Canada
