I like the alpine sedge but not the pot it's in so much. And I think the overlap of the scroll is perfect, I would just like to see the two of them a little to the left. Maybe bringing the whole display a little left would be good.

You might be right on that point as this picture was not taken "straight" on as it were. If you take notice of the right legs of the display stand that they are aligned with each each other. This shows me that the photographer was standing a tad to the right of the display. If it were indeed taken with the stand centered in the photo the right branches of the tree would be about half way (or more) over the scroll instead of approx. one third which it shows now. Although I do like a bit of the branches being in front of the scroll they are actually more than half way across it which I feel is a bit too much.
Just having fun splitting hairs! Just give me that damn tree and I'll be a very happy camper!

The squat accent plant disrupts the vertical unity of the composition, as does the horizontal nature of the backdrop. The gratuitous hole in the trunk spoils an otherwise excellent tree, and the scroll is not flat against the backdrop, making it look out of plumb. On top of that the illustration is placed with awkward borders, and there's way too much negative space in the entire setting.

The illustration should be raised within its borders, the accent plant replaced with vertical structure and the entire composition compressed within a vertical backdrop.

Kansai, please stop beating around the bush! Let your true feelings out!

Seriously, thanks for your input. This is a great forum for things like this and I appreciate everyone's expressions of interest.
I agree with some of your observations, especially about the crooked scroll. It should definitely have been straightened for the display, or weighted with a decorative weight so it would hang straight.

As far as the hole in the trunk is concerned, I assure you it is completely natural and was a former knot formed by a branch that had died many years ago. I find it is a distinguishing feature of this tree and sets it apart from many. That being said, I think it might be a good thing to reduce the deadwood a bit above it as it gets just a bit heavy there.

Typically, accent plants are not placed on tall stands. Mats or slabs are best since they are usually ground plants. Second trees may be placed on a taller stand, but in this case, a second tree should be deciduous tree, so the need would be to find one in semi-cascade or cascade to use a taller stand.

Again, thanks for the input, and feel free to add your thoughts on the other display critiques as well!

From the looks of the pictures/displays I have seen so far I don't believe the exhibitor had much choice as to the backdrop. One might have had the choice of the scroll but as to it's being vertical or horizontal it seems as though these were standard backdrops and one had to make the best of them as they could within there give parameters.

Knowledge, experience, dedication and about 20 or so years of pains taking care. I guess the later would be where the patience enters in.
