My new "Christmas tree"

Hello, all,

This little honey was a Christmas present from my lovely wife. It's a Ficus burtt-davyi, aka veldt fig or South African fig. I noticed it in the on-line catalog at Meehan's Miniatures a few weeks ago. Shortly thereafter, my wife realized I really wanted it (maybe it was the drool on the floor that clued her in.) It arrived today.

The pics don't show it real well, but it has good trunk taper, and of course there are plenty of branches from which to choose. There's a scar on the lower trunk (reddish arrows in last photo) from a trunk chop in the past; I'm going to hollow that out and turn it into a feature.

And it even arrived sporting a fig (blue arrow.)

BTW, Centaura, I know how you feel about tropicals and shohin, but no joint custody on this one!

Great looking little ficus treebeard.
Nice flowing shape and you're lucky it has such a good taper.
Then again I suppose this is what drew you to it.

Merry Christmas, Phil

Joint custody - who does he think I am? If I'm going to steal something, I'm going to claim full ownership of it! Heh, treebeard, what's that over that way?

Kidding aside, that is a nice starter. Good taper and lots of branches in good places. That's a good find.

That's my kid making off with one of your trees while you try to distract me. Bye!

Ah, let me introduce Bruiser, my bonsai security force. This is a shot of him when he was 7 months old, he's bigger and his mane has filled in now.

Are you sure he's not your free-form pruning assistant?

No, my cats are actually fairly good when it comes to leaving the bonsai alone. Of course, they might have psychically picked up on the fact that they'd be skinned alive and strung up by their toenails if they so much as munched one leaf. He does look like he's about to take a bite in that picture.
