Yes, tropical species need a lot of extra care in most of the northern climates represented by members here, so many don't go through the effort. Some just can't, others consider bonsai a summer hobby that they put into winter storage and then take out again in the spring. It is also hard to get good tropical species, at least for me in the United States. There are only one or two vendors who regularly bring tropical material to sell at the shows I attend in Chicago.
