Small Elm tree

Hi, this is my Chinease Elm tree. It started off as a root cutting from my bigger Elm tree. I cut it off about the start of summer last year and once rooted in its new pot it grew a few shoots that i got into this basic shape before winter came. As you can see its very small and thats how im going to keep it. I was thinking of growing it into a broom style but am not sure, so im open to any suggestions on a nice style for this wee tree, cheers Phil G.

Hi Phil,

Well, you might also consider a wind-swept style?

Hi Cheryl, thanks for your input. I never considered a windswept for this tree, i was blinded by the prospect of a broom style!!
I would have to prune it carefully to train it windswept style cos its really small, almost too small to wire it up as its only two and a half inches tall so it would be tricky....maybee a good challenge though, cheers Phil G.

Hi Phil,

Yes, good luck with a small one like that! You have to watch them very carefully, they need much more care than their larger cousins.

I had a link to some Asian bonsai the size of a thimble (Shito size), but I can't find it. Here is a link to some a bit larger more of almost a Shohin size.

Good Luck,

Talking These are cute!

Hi Phil,

Was cleaning out my Favorites on my computer and came across this..

tea cup bonsai

It would seem that you would have to somehow drill holes into the bottoms though?

Phil have a look in our Mame Shito and Shohin Page here you will see a few Chinese elms that will give you some ideas.
The first thing is to let it grow a bit more so you have more branching.
Then your options will be wider.Pup

Hi Pup how are you doing? Thanks for the reply. I had a look at the trees in the shohin section...very nice. I see you have a few little ones yourself, realy nice trees you, have there! Are they all home grown or are they bought trees?
The one in the photo is my second mini tree as i have a small cotoneaster as well that is only three and a half inches tall and is about 6 yrs old. It was growing on top of a wall with no soil at all!! so i pulled it off and stuck it in a pot!!!! ill have some photos soon once she starts to grow properly. The elm was taken from a root that was cut off from my bigger elm tree. I potted it up last summer and she grew a few shoots on her before winter so this is going to be my first proper year of growing it so hopefully she grows well eh!! Cheers Phil G

Hi Phil,

No, it is not your computer. Wow, talk about timing...their domain site expired this past Sunday, May 3rd!

Prowler, used to like the little ones too, he rescued some as well. He had a favorite he called "ski jumper" but, some wee creature carried it off and he found it finally quite a bit away from its pot. He couldn't save it, it was too late. So, keep a close eye on your trees outside.

Who knows, maybe they will renew their domain? There were some nice little trees on that site.
