This layer was done late April 2008 I think this may have been too early I have had a lot of die back but it is still alive with two flower buds.

I have done another four layers at the beginning of this month when the flower buds were about one inch long, time will tell if this is a better time to layer or not so far the flowers are still looking ok.

No Prowler it is not a good old hack up, it is a save as much as I can before it dies.
Here in NZ we have a native borer (commonly known as the lemon tree borer) the beetle lays its eggs over summer on a broken branch or where ever the bark is broken then the larva spends the next two years eating the plant from the inside. They are extremely hard to find and even harder to kill without damaging the plant. The main runner that I'm taking the layers from is all but ready to colapse this is probably my last chance to save anything, its been a beautiful plant. Shrimpy

Shrimpy, that looks really good. I have a small wisteria I started a couple of years ago. From what I have read it will be 9 to 15 years before I will see any flowers! I think the air layer sounds good to me. Matter fact I have been trying to learn more about air layer, it seems like a good way to get "mature" or "mature looking" tree in a short time...10 -15 years grow time is pushing it for some of use.

Hi Michael
Try the following site www.evergreengardenworks.com/airlayer.htm I found it helpful to understand the princpal of how layering works even for doing cuttings. Just to test some thoughts I had after reading the article I've managed to grow roots on the biggest cutting I've ever done a piece of plum fire wood 12 inches tall by 8 inches thick and two other pieces that were smaller and had been split have caloused over with roots just starting. Wow, supersize me!
Wisteria here in the northern hemisphere are said to be easy to air-layer in spring. I've never tried it myself, but I've seen pictures on French forums. Yours is beautiful, I find the white species much more delicate than the purple one. |
