Prowler
I have learn't a lot playing round with my Wisteria so much so I can now see ways of using Layering to improve and speed up some of my bonsai stock.
Instead of reducing the top down simply move the roots up.
Thats what I love about working with plants there is always something else to learn.

well done!

i love wisteria and see air layering as the way to go as far as not waiting forever to flower and gain trunk thickness. i had great luck with air layering wisteria here in Portland Or. Maybe I will get some picture up this spring.

Hi Everyone
This Wisteria was air layered April 2008
The first pic was taken September 2008 about four weeks after cutting off the mother plant and potted up
The second pic is of the plant 14 months on its own roots, it had 43 flower buds I removed 18 so the weight of the flowers didn't break the smaller branches

Hi All
An update of my Wisteria Air Layer done May 2007.
I cut her off the mother plant July 2008 and potted up.
First flowers she had on her new roots spring 2008 .
Since 2008 to get the trunk to bulk up I let her grow wild giving her a hair cut every now and then to keep her under control.
this worked well more than tripling in diameter in the three years.
May this year I removed all the young wood then re-potted her into a 50 litre pot (I potted her where this photo was taken and I won't be moving her any time soon she weighs between 60 and 70 Kg)
She responded well to being re-potted by producing more than 100 flower buds this spring I thinned them to about 40.
Now that the trunk has filled out I plan to reduce her head by 1/3 to start her training.

Angry

The four Layers I did October 2008 have all died turns out they were full of the dreaded lemon tree borer: :

Still the one that lived is stunning. I have been trying to grow out several years then last spring the deer ate them...

Nice! Sorry to hear about the others. I have a question for you:

Did you strip the bark or tourniquet for the layer?

Merci.
