Thanks, everyone. I must admit, it has turned out far better than I ever imagined it would. I'm glad I didn't get rid of it! The thing that really saved it, though, was the root work I've done over the last three years. Without the grafts, careful root pruning, and potting into a large, but shallow grow box, I would never have gotten that flare, which really saved the taper.
Matt, no worries on the post! Like I said, it was a nice welcome! Jim, the cascade is still around, but it took a huge hit last summer from spider mites. They were horrible . . . I almost lost a dwarf Alberta in my landscape. Last summer was the worst drought this area has seen in years, and the mites just went nuts, everywhere. Very few spruces and pines survived, and my neighbor's taxus hedge lost about 75% of the trees. Long story short, I almost lost the lower half of the cascade, and am still trying to save a couple of the branches. I think it'll be fine in the long run, but it's a bit rough right now. Thanks for asking!

Scott!!
My apologies for my somewhat belated welcome back but I just noticed this today. Seems as though I'm mostly in the background turning knobs, adjusting settings and just plain 'ol trying to keep the site afloat as it were and not really getting involved in posting too much here myself although I wish I could. Very nice progression on the tree my man but then again you always seemed to have the right touch and patience ( something I seem to sorely lack ). Great to hear from you again and I've thought about you quite frequently and missed hearing from you. It's been a tad slow here lately so this was a nice refreshing surprise. Don't be a stranger....... ~Phil

Ficus
Trout !!
As far as i know there aint no rules for ficus. Each one is unique and up to the owner. A very nice job on that one, they are a very hardy tree and can handle chopping about. Glad to see you back, keep us updated about it. Cheers

OK, I have an update. I've been working on this tree now for two years with Ted Matson, and it's starting to really take shape. Almost there now, just needs to extend a little more in the lower branches on each side. Can't believe I used to hate this tree--it's now my favorite. It is being displayed with a stone I found in a nearby stream that looks (to me) like a meditating monk.
As always, I'd love to hear any ideas, and any questions are welcome. ![]()
