Spring Japanese Maple
This one has just budded out. It's still a seedling but I couldn't help but share the young new foliage. I like the graceful curve in the trunk.
Tom P.S. I hope you appreciate that I put them in as attachments |

Hi Tom,
thanks for the pic... nice dark red leaves. I must admit this year I am going a bit maple-mad... May be you have seen my two new maples under deciduous trees? The seigen has nicely leafed out now and has a stunning red colour, then I have my Deshojo and the Katsura which look good though the leaves of the Deshojo got a bit touched by frost. The Arakawa and the Viridis are "normal" green maples (right now at least the viridis has very nice autumn colours if you like that) but I also have some very young material right now which ordered last autumn. I have planted them out in my fathers garden and unfortunately the Fujinami nishiki doesn't seem to be bicoloured - at least right now. They told me in the shop that they aren't all the reliable and the snails have been having a feast on my "First ghost" The "Toyama nishiki" seems to be coming nicely though as is the narrow Sangu kaku and the strap leaf maple and the "Butterfly". Last week-end I have planted the "Japanese sunrise", "Usu midori", a young "Seigen" and a buergerianum variety (Miysama yatsubus |

Yes I've seen some of your maples and they are nice. When you take the pics, post them here and we'll start a maple thread. I have a couple others, not nearly as nice, that my mom collected for me growing on the side of the sidewalk. I've never been too in to Japanese maples because I've had bad luck with them. I wasn't expecting this one or the other two to survive the winter because I pretty much left them out in the open but here it is.
I don't like that they take so long to develop thick aged trunks. I cant plant it in the ground because the squirrels will eat it so I've decided to keep it as it is as a nice elegant tree. I'll develop the branches and find a nice pot for it and enjoy it as it is. Good luck with yours. Tom P.S. Do you think I could get away with re-potting it now? I have a nice pot that will compliment it well. Last edited by JTGJr25; 04-28-2008 at 03:50 PM.. |

Well, I am not sure where you are but I would have thought that if you don't disturb the roots too much you should be fine. But for the moment I would plant it in a pot that is largish so that it gets thicker... The leaves are fairly large so the in proportion the trunk is very thin as yet.

Yea I know I just want to see what the future nebari could be and I'll be able to see the quality of the roots without poking around too much. I need to wait until I get my order of pine bark before I can repot though.
