Hi all!

I've been registered for a little while now, and now I have something to brag about. Here are my bonsai, the Japanese Juniper was my first, and the Chinese Elm is my second one. I picked up the Elm at a local show, it's a little hard to see the detail in the pic, as there is a branch pointing at the viewer. I really don't know how old either one is, anyone up for a guess?

How old they are really doesn't matter unless you are waiting for mature bark to start forming, which takes years. I'd estimate they are maybe 3-5 years old. They are a nice start into a great hobby. Make sure you read up on how to keep them alive and thriving.

Congratulations! Welcome to the hobby. I'll second M.B.'s suggestion to read up on their care. Go to your local library and check out a few books on bonsai if you haven't already.

Bark schmark, makes no difference really. I've got a line to a local guy who's been doing this for years. And of course places like this and the interweb is full of good info.

Bark makes no difference? Perhaps you would care to explain that? Mary was simply stating that the age of a bonsai doesn't really mean squat, but how it looks. Nothing more.....nothing less. Hopefully I misunderstood your response to Mary's post as it sounded rather flippant.

No, no I apologize if I came off that way. I was simply saying that it doesn't matter to me if bark looks old, or the age for that matter.

Such is the problem with the typewritten word, and it’s all too easy to misinterpret. You came on right after the site was undergoing some very bad technical issues which I’m just sorting out so I’m a tad uptight. With that said, my sincere apologies and welcome to the site!

No problem Phil, I totally understand. Sarcasm doesn't translate at all, hence the invention of the smiley. I too manage/own a very active forum Z-Talk! - Home while I don't have to worry about the technical aspect (I leave that to proboards) it can be very time consuming. I've debated on going with vBulletin, but I decided to go the easy route.

Good choice as vBulletin has turned into a royal horses ass since they were taken over by Internet Brands. Whatever you do, stay AWAY from them. If I had the money, and the know how I'd transfer this site over to another place in a New York minute!
