May be shohin ?
Hello, every body,
I like Bonsai very much, especially small Bonsai. I have a tree, it's height 15cm. This is the tree I have already pruned in this morning. Hoping to receive your comments. I'm in a divided mind whether this tree may be called Shohin or not. Thank you all. |

I forget the parameters for each class/size of bonsai but I'll see if I can find it.
You can also do a Google on it by simply searching for "bonsai sizes", "sizes of bonsai", etc. ~Phil~

Tree size is used only to clasify trees for exhibitions.
The Miniature Bonsai is any tree smaller than 3 inches. (7.5 cm) Mame is any tree three to six inches high. (7.5 to 15 cm) Shohin is between six and twelve inches. (15 to 30 cm) Medium Bonsai are 12 to 20 inches high Large Bonsai are 2 - 4 feet high. In China I saw Bonsai very large (larger than 10 feet) in cement of marble pots 15 feet long. The actual measures can change depending on the author: Peter Chan classifies Mames as any tree 2-3 inches, and Shohin 6-7 inches. |

Yes, I see a variety of classifications for bonsai, but they are mainly used for shows which need to divide trees into categories. In some publications on British shows, they use shohin and chohin as two different classifications - I think chohin was slightly taller than the shohin category. I would consider your tree a shohin tree, but that's because I think of mames as being the very tiny trees. Its my understanding that "mame" means "bean" in japanese, so therefore referring to trees that are very tiny.
I help work on a 9ft tall ficus tree, that an official Japanese judge would not even consider a bonsai - the arbitrary height when something stops being a bonsai is 100cm I've been told. But again, that's mainly for the Japanese shows where a lot of money is riding on the different categories, and not necessarily important to the casual bonsai grower. -Centaura |

That ficus has some great movement in the top, and some good trunk character. The only thing I don't like is that one horizontal root. I think that's a shot of the back of the tree, so its not as big an issue. But the branching is very well placed. Nice tree!
