Shohin - Juniperus chinensis 'horizontalis'

Hi everybody,

This is a project that had a previous design orientated to the han-kengai, two years ago. As it was, it didnt satisfy me at all, anyway i took the oportunity to take it to one of my club reunions where we talked about aesthetics. The opinions i received were more in the meaning that i should forget about the tree and concentrate more on the pot. I couldn't be more in agreement. The pot was actually nice, but not definitily to the tree itsel and to its development stage.

So after that same reunion, with a help of friend of mine and a nice bottle of portuguese wine we put ourselves to discuss to the maximum the possible immediate modifications that we could eventually apply to the established design in order to make it more interesting. This was the result:

This last photo shows already the proposed pot for this design. The pot is from a Portuguese potter (Miguel Neto).

Hope you like it, if you have any critique, please be at ease to do it.

Gustavo

That's really quite good, I saw the first image, and thought, oo, Mallsai, but you really turned that around! I like the new pot it's going into also, is this one you made?

Are you going to apply Lime Sulphur to the Jins?

You know where you have the small stump of a jin at the base of the tree, what would you think of, if it was to backbud from the base of that Jin, to let the new shoot grow and shape it to create a more artistic Jin like the other ones? I think that would compliment the tree superbly.

Hi Matt,

The proposed pot, it's mine in property but not actual as an author. The pot was actually bought from a great artist here in Portugal that i admire quite much, due to his amazing works and quality offered. the name of the potter is Miguel Neto and he's portuguese as well. Until now, i haven't made any pots yet, just glazed them in one of my club activities.

In relation to the Jin,

The work was done in the ending of this last winter and as it was in the pot that you see from the first picture for two years already, after i did this job i've waited until the plant started giving some early signs of recovery and i transplanted it to that last pot. Later in May when the live tissues exposed in the Jin showed some signs of healthy recover i applied the Jin liquid with slight drops of black ink.

The first Jin that you actually see from the nebari position, it gave us some discussion as it is against the tree movement, but then again as of its angle of growing and as it was supposelly a first branch that died in the structure, meaning that is the oldest, the decaying process with easily get it, not allowing it to maintain with the same pattern movement as the others, though in our imagination, in the past it may have shown something like the others do. At least this is what i expect and perceive as well, by seeing this image.

thanks for the comment,

anttal63,

Thanks! Indeed. Time, along with good care is the main teacher of our trees.

Best compliments,

Gustavo
