Shohin and Mame Bonsai must have the feeling of a "small thing". That is more important than the height or length. It also should be able to be held in one hand. A tiny Bonsai in a large container does not qualify as a Shohin or Mame Bonsai.

I have just finished reading a book that was given to me.
The title Simon & Schusters Guide to Bonsai Edited by Victoria Jahn Brooklyn Botanic Gardens Isbn 0-671-73488-1 I found it an extremely interesting read. One thing I did find was reference to classifications. Which are as follows. Shito up to 3in (7.5cms) Mame 3-6 in (7.5--15 cm ) Kotate Mochi 6-12 in ( 15--30 cm ) Chiu Bonsai 12- 24 in ( 30-60 cm ) Dia Bonsai 24- 39 in ( 60-100 cm ). I am not sure if this is regarded as diffintative. Just thought it might help. Pup ![]()

i agree with alain a few posts back. grow the best little mini cascade you can and people can call it what they want. if its tiny people will call it mame. if its small then a shohin. it is nice to know the rules but this is just a label, not really a rule as to styling.
