Root cuttings : apple-tree
Apple-trees (and pear-trees, quince and the like) root cuttings are very easy to make.
1/ in late winter (about 1 month before the buds open, but maybe it can be done earlier, in late autumn for example, at least when the tree is in dormancy), cut a root. Easy, so far, isn't it ?... 2/ wrap the root in cotton cloth with a very draining soil (90% coarse grit and 10% composted bark frinstance) 3/ leave the top of the root exposed to light, and seal the cut with cutting paste 4/ in spring, buds are very likely to appear 5/ remove the "wrapping" gradually Example : Root cutting of wild apple tree growing in a hedge, taken ca. 2002. May 2007 : ![]() March 2008 : ![]() Good for cascades too. Fun and cheap Give it a try ! |

If you can't find any where you live, you can use plasticine, there are other substitutes too. Quote:
I only experienced this technique with deciduous trees, but I'm sure it must work with tropical species too. |
