i have a bunch of seeds that i have kept in my fridge now some for 2 years. will that stratify them, or do they need to get wet, and cold to stratify them?

In the fridge wrapped in a moist kitchen towel and inside a sandwich bag is normally all that is needed, and it is normally 2-3 months, not years lol,
You could always try them, if they work, you have some more trees, if they fail you have some compost to stick back in the heap. -Matt- I merged your two threads, seeing as they were on the same subject, to reduce any confusion / repeated information sharing.

If they were kept dry in fridge, no chemical reaction could occur thus breaking the dormancy.
You should wet them in a paper towel, in a plastic bags for 90-120 days. Check on them once a week, as some may germinate earlier. These one should be planted as soon as possible. Check on them to make sure they are not rotting in your fridge. Last edited by camay123; 01-05-2009 at 03:34 PM.. |

Yes, soak them for 24-48hrs. Usually, viable seeds will drown. Floater are usually empty or the water as not penetrate to the embryo.

I have read that maple seeds need to go through two winters to germinate. I have some seeds of acer grandidentatum var. sinuosum that I am currently stratifying; I have them in a tray of moist potting soil, covered to keep in the humidity (I probably should have done the paper towel thing). They have already received two months of cold stratification followed by two months of warm stratification, and they are now in the second phase of cold stratification. I have also read that they need light to germinate. This is my first time trying this; so we shall see what happens.
Here is a useful link: Grow'Em Plant Propagation Database: Acer japonicum Hope your endeavors are succesful! Travis |
