The way I understand it, when you repot into a way oversized pot, the outside edges dry out much quicker than the center where the plant is sitting. This can set up the perfect recipe for root rot with the tree sitting in constantly damp soil. The roots don't want to populate the dry edge area so there is no advantage to planting it in a huge pot. I think there were some other reasons but I can't remember them right now, been a long day.
