Hi Oviduim.

A trunk chop is probably the best way to sort this tree out like cheryl said, but I have another idea up my sleeve, ever heard of Air layering?

I have attached a pic, if you attempt the airlayer where the black mark is on the picture (the red ones are just branches my Obsessive Compulsive wants to see removed), you will save the fairly nice broom style tree that comes off the second bend, and you can do a trunk chop with the remaining stump and roots.

Two potentially very nice trees for the price of one.

I'd put it in the bigger pot, and wait until August before you Air layer, and a year before you chop, doing a re-pot and chop at the same time is pretty much a death sentence.

Pot size, I'd go for something maybe half the length, Width and Depth again of the size its in.

Hi,

Here is an example of Air-Layering that Matt was referring to.

Hope it helps,

Hi guyz,
I've repoted the tree into a bigger pot (see pic) and another question arised: As you can see there is another reverse taper area ( as seen in the second picture) so I was wondering whether I should consider to airlayer higher up then first sugested by you Matt, or is there a way of thickening the lower thinner area?

Thanking uz,
Ovidiu

Hi Ovidium, I'd stick to where I suggested to do the airlayer first time, if you do go for a Broom style tree, the area you are concerned about, is where a majority of the branches will come from, and is naturally swollen on trees anyway, so It's nothing to worry about really.

Hi there,
A few weeks later and my ficus was showing new grouth, so I've decided to go for the airlayer.
There is one difference though, I've used John Innes Seed soil.... and I hope will work...!
Here are a few pics:

Thank uz!
I'll keep in touch!

Good Luck!

Hi,

Yes, please keep us updated. I hope your tree will be alright, as it seems a bit soon to undertake what you did. Just make sure to watch it closely and give it plenty of care.
