OK...if the tree is 75, I suppose a hundered a year for one as well done as this would be a pretty good price.
An idea of years in training might help but, since most of the answers so far are about what we should/would expect, I'm going lowball on the off chance the intent of the game was to suprise or shock us, no? My bargin basement price then, is: $4,500 USD. Cheers, Arty |

I'm pretty sure this bonsai was featured in bonsai publications some years ago. If not, his brother.
If I were to sell it, I'd start the bids at 3 750 €; The first offer would be at 4 000 €. I think it could go up to 6 000 - 7 500 €, but it depends on what their potential owners want to do with it. I wouldn't buy it: I have no place to share it with the large number of people it deserves. I would only buy it it I had enough money to fund a bonsai garden for "the masses". But it wouldn't bring me any satisfaction to own a masterpiece done by someone I don't know, and keep it for myself. To me, buying such a tree as an individual (a "collectionneur"), makes no sense to me. Unless you find this tree is beautiful, but you can still improve it a lot. Wow, I've just saved a lot... |

Hi,
whatever the price is, I'm pretty sure it'll be emphatically over the top; Besides, it's not the true age of a tree that's all important (it isn't to me, anyway), but rather the overall patina of ageing beauty (= wabi / sabi) it evocates . . . And to create that look: that's up to us (and only us), guys . . .

Sorry, I had forgotten all about this thread!
I’ll certainly agree with Michel as to how old a tree is not being important. It could be 200 hundred years old but if it’s not well formed it’s nothing but a 200 year old stump! First, I did not pick out this tree because of its age, nor because I necessarily even liked it. I simply picked out the most expensive tree that I found at this particular bonsai nursery. I also look into to their offerings every so often as I’ve purchased a few trees from them before. The nursery is Brussel’s and they do carry some nice high quality trees. However, what really cracks me up is how they advertise the Phoenix graft trees. They always give the age of the driftwood as 150 years old! Number one….how on earth would they ever know the age on a piece of driftwood! Secondly, and most importantly, who CARES! As for the price of the tree it is $7,000. Not sold yet. Well, maybe when its 76 years old. ~Phil~

Hi,
right You are, Phil ! let alone the idea, "the age of the driftwood" . . . If that ever where a standard, I wonder what (commercial) pricing would skyrocket up to if we "Tanukied" onto a splinter of a 6th century viking boat, or onto a piece off the holy cross if that were possible, for that matter, . . . it's absolutely ridiculous. Talking about "special" bonsai, You got me thinking, here . . . If possible, I'll soon put up the story of a bonsai with a really "very special" (and I guess especially for You Americans) sentimental value . . . , but first I gotta get the facts and a pic from the owner; a very nice chap, and I'll ask him very politely .
