Air Layering Japanese Maple
Hello, I started my first air layer on a dwarf laceleaf japanese maple at the end of may this year. Its getting close to winter, and still not roots appear through the poly. I used thick poly, but i think i should still be able to see them. Should i check to see if there are roots forming, or just let it stay over winter? Thanks for any advice.

I took the moss off of the tree, and definately no roots growing. There is a large bulge where it repaired itself. The bulge is toward the top of the cut. Its kind of a yellowish color below the bulge on the rest of the cut area. The area is very rough where i had cut out the area for new roots. The bulge actually looks like several large roots starting to come out, but grew over itself and repaired. The limb i layered is doing fine, it looks like the rest of the tree. Should i do anything to protect it before winter, or should it be ok? Also, when i try again in the spring, do i use the same area to try to root? I didnt use rooting harmone last time. Maybe thats what the problem was? Do you have any thoughts where i messed up? Ill get a pic on here in a few minutes. Thanks again.

dissectums don't air-layer well for starters and if you started the layer late then that also hampered your efforts. Pack the sphagnum back around the wound and leave it till spring. In the mean time I would read every tid bit out there to try and pull this off....starting with the right IBA concentration...you have a tough nut to crack...not an impossible one, but tough one.

Thanks alot Tom. I have heard it was a tough one. Well, after i had already done it because everyone said maples were so easy, lol. I am wondering if the damp moss would freeze and hurt the tree? Here are some pictures of it if that would help. Should i just wrap it like it is, or scrape back down to the wood again? Basically start over, or just protect until spring? Thanks again for the advice. Let me know if you need better pictures. Ill get more.
