check this video out..!?
I don;t want to say anything negative about this guy's technique, so I won;t but it strikes me as a real short cut method of bonsai creation. He apparently has little knowledge of the normal styling techniques and if you view the later videos he shows more of his trees- the third one shows many and is a few years later- apparently he just lets 'em grow...
I was interested in his idea- using only sphagnum moss as a substrate- but it isn't something I think I will be trying. It just seems like... Cheating to me.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPVaA...eature=related Just thought some people might find it interesting.. |

In principle, when considering a new way of doing something, there are two questions that need to be answered: 1) Is the current method (or methods) flawed? 2) Is the new method significantly better?
If the answer to both questions is not 'yes', then there is little point in changing. In my case, I can't say my current method of potting; using akadama or kanuma, doing a more considered root pruning and wiring the trees in to their pots, is notably flawed (in terms of results). However, I can say that (again, for my circumstances), the 'new' method seems not only not to be an improvement, but would carry a significant degree of risk that my current method does not. Sphagnum moss holds a huge amount of water. It might drain well, but like a sponge, it stays wet (rather than damp) for a long time. Most trees I have don't like that. |

I wouldn't let that moron mow my lawn!
His statement that all trees love acid in and of itself speaks volumes as to his ignorance. As for his pots I might possibly use one for a door stop and nothing else! All in all.....quite amusing! ~Phil

As for the moss there was no need to place that on soaking wet sphagnum moss as that stuff will grow moss, mold and God knows what else faster than the Ebola virus! Of course than again, that horrendous pot might scare everything else away! The other thing that really drove me up the wall was his constant comment after snipping off branches was; "There, now it looks more Oriental". Just what the hell is "Oriental" looking supposed to mean?! This guy belongs in a mall kiosk selling painted turtles! What ticks me off is that some unsuspecting person who does not know any better and is interested in starting bonsai may possibly see this pea brained idiots video and think thats all there is to it! As to those who are initiated to bonsai and know better it was to say the least very entertaining and in some ways actually quite funny! Was almost like watching a Saturday Night Live skit! ~Phil

I agree Phil. I saw this video a while ago, I found it after searching for real videos. Somehow the juniper survived for a year and actually grew. This guy has no bonsai all he has are plants in ugly pots. In some of the comments that I read, it seemed some people actually accepted this idea. Very sad.
