collecting material

im very new at Bonsai and i've done nothing but read and read and read for the last couple months. i have yet to start any actual bonsai progression yet. im really just trying to read and ask questions as much as possible to gather as much information as i can. Right now i'm interested in gathering as much material as i can so come growing season i will material to work with.
Here is my question....

I have been reading so much that every body has their own preference on when to collect "wild" trees and shrubs. I have access to some family property that (10 years ago when i was in it last) had some uniquely shaped trees in it. So... i plan on going in to the woods and finding what i desire. o when is the best time for me to go digging ? i am open to any and all opinions. thank you

im just as new as you. lol. so we are in the "same boat" situation. i have four little (what i believe to be sugar maples), a small alberta spruce and a jade plant that intend on taking a cutting from. the jade i have is actually a cutting from my moms jade plant which is around 23 years old ( not a bonsai, just house plant). i will be going to my parents property to gather more material in the future. there is an ironwood (i believe) on a hill side that has a good shape to it. there is also a swampy soil area that has a lot of trees with nice exposed roots which would make for attractive nebari. i plan to try my hand at air layering my moms lilac bush as well.

very nice! my family also has land, around 80 acres. im mostly working with memosa, chinese elm, willows of some kind, and one beautiful tree i have yet to identify. im hoping someont can help answer my questions soon for i fear the time to act is at hand for it is late fall and winter is approaching rapidly. as far as cuttings go i have roughly 20 of the willows in water for they root with extreme ease, and a few chinese elm simi hard wood cuttings in a vermic. and peat mixture. the large number of potensai that is surrounding me is driving me nuts tho!! i must learn how to go about collecting.
