Box

Hi,

I did a workshop with Francois Jeker last Sunday working on a tree I first got a bit more than a year ago in one of his workshops where we worked on the dead wood. As usual with Francois it was a very interesting and pleasant workshop.

What do you think of the endresult?

Hi Ravenna, thats a really nice looking tree. It reminds me of one that i have in one of my books. It will look really good in a year or two once it has a wee bit more growth on it so well done!! look foreward to some pics in a few month to see what it looks like. Could you get it into a shallower pot maybee?!? cheers Phil G.

Something tells me this tree will get the perfect pot, made to suit it perfectly.

Ravenna please post pictures as it progresses. A wonderful tree in the making.

Hi folks,

glad you like it it. Yes the growth is rather sparse now as it lost about half it's green - I hope that it will cope alright. Regarding the pot Francois suggested a round pot in the colour of the bark or of the leaves. Whether I will manage to produce that "perfect pot" only time will tell. But I sure will try to produce something till it is time to repot it next year and while the tree is still imperfect it will be less obvious if my pots are too though with Francois Jekers helping hand the tree has better chances of turning into "something good" than the clay on the wheel...

P.S.: Do you have a pic of the tree in that book Phil? Would be interesting to see how that was formed esp. if it is a similar tree to mine.

Hi treebeard,

glad you like the tree. I suspect that if you have never seen such a dramatic boxwood then you have never seen the trees by Francois Jeker. Have a look on his website if you are interested: Jeker Bonsaï, bonsais, expos, photos, publications There is a dia show of his garden and his trees under "arbres"...have fun.

Thumbs up Excellent Job!

Hi Ravenna,

I see you have been busy again! I keep asking myself "where does she keep all these trees" when she only has a tiny balcony?

Beautiful tree, yes please keep us updated with lots of pics.

Hi Cheryl,

I am glad that you like the result. I hadn't planned to do yet another workshop with Francois (not sure whether I told you guys that I did one already this year where he helped me work on the dead wood of my lagerstroemia which you know already and I am due to go to another one in autumn where I will be getting yet another box tree for my "tiny" balcony... ) but I am glad I did go now and could work on this tree more at leisure rather than working on it the during the workshop in autumn where I'd rather concentrate on my new tree. I am already very curious as to what that tree will be like.

As regards my "tiny" balcony: it isn't tiny, it is actually fairly large though OBVIOUSLY it could be larger. It is possible to keep so many trees there because there is no space for anyone to sit there anymore... well not completely true but near the truth... I can squeeze in if I want to but it is rather tight. Most of my trees are standing in holders for flower troughs which hang on the railing. I have expanded a bit into the garden of the house as nobody really uses it and some of the larger trees stand there (including the box). And I guess I have also often told you about very young material I got myself like all those maple varieties I have and which are growing in my fathers garden. Whenever those trees are large enough to be turned into bonsai I will be in SERIOUS trouble though...

To my shame I have admit that I will be due to get some more young maple varieties in August but "only" four more new ones... and I guess having admitted that I shouldn't mention that I asked a gardener to produce cuttings of some other trees for me for next year. Still I quite look forward to them: besides a couple of maples I will be getting a variegated gingko and a prunus mume omoi-no-mama. Obviously they will be tiny and take LOTS of time to get to a bonsai worthy size.

Hmm... sometimes I think I should have been a plant hunter in the 19th century - though these days it is much easier with ordering via e-mail...

Hi Ravenna,

Well, I guess you could keep most of them Mame or that super tiny size? I'm sure with all the innovative contraptions that they have out now, you will figure out a way to maximize your space, add-on or extend it. Or, maybe you could rent your neighbors? Oh, oh we just might have to do an intervention soon and I shouldn't be enabling you.

Good luck with them all and remember...lots of updates and pics?

Yeah, yeah, just go on making fun of me... I had hoped that at least here people would be a bit more understanding concerning my "vice"...

Despite your "nasty comments" I will try and keep you up-dated even though I have to admit that I have become a bit lazy as far as picture taking and posting things on forums is concerned...
