Bald Cypress?
Not sure why I had to have this bald cypress stock. Maples seemed so tame compare to this. This stock is about 38" high and 8" circumference at the trunk. I did some reading but am unsure where to start. Should I shorten this cypress? Appreciate any advice. Thanks.

I would definitely place it in a larger/deeper pot until it establishes itself first.
That seems to be a pretty large piece of stock to start out in such a shallow tray/pot. Let it grow for a couple of years until you know it is growing well before placing it in a bonsai container. That thing needs some room to get going before even considering such a shallow container or it will surely die. It first needs some substantial room to acquire a good root system before even considering such a small/shallow container. ~Phil

Phil, I took your advice and found the largest container available which happens to be a recycling bin. I drilled drainage holes and used a combination of organic material and turface. I will just wait and see what happens. I hope I did not kill this prebonsai stock.

I would chop this tree at least halfway down (next spring, not this year) to promote more taper. There are a number of techniques with which to do this. I suggest you search all the bonsai forums among other sites. Chris
