Great looking already. If you do decide to chop the one in half to shorten it in a few years I suggest you air layer the top portion before doing so to give yourself an extra mature looking tree. Texas Ebony have a great masculine appearance with a cool leaf habit just like the Brazilian rain tree and Orchid tree. Love it
You could also do the same with the two smaller ones in the future and make a Forest or grove arrangement, just a thought. Last edited by Mike423; 11-07-2010 at 07:06 PM.. |

I recently ordered 50 Texas Ebony (Ebenopsis ebano) seeds and had a 62% success rate with all now 1 to 3 inches tall. I've chronicled photos and details of my method at a new site I created for Texas Ebony exclusively. I've also included photos of Texas Ebony provided by members of this and other forums with their name on photo and link back to these discussion forums incase someone would like to contact the contributors.
Within the pages I created are photos and information on Texas Ebony throughout the internet, Texas Ebony Bonsai, and growing your own from seed. You can find the site at: Texas Ebony (Ebenopsis ebano) |

Week 5 of growing Texas Ebony (Ebenopsis ebano) from seed. Lookin' good!
Arty, that 20 something year old tree of yours is gorgeous. Nice trunk and shape at that trained height! Thanks! Last edited by KimchiMonger; 12-13-2010 at 07:42 AM.. |

Month 4 of Texas Ebony (Ebenopsis ebano) seedlings
The Texas Ebony (Ebenopsis ebano) seedlings are coming along well. Five seemed to of died off but before discarding them, I transplanted them into seed starter soil mix and two of them have new leaf growth - they might make it!
The other 30 are happy clams now enjoying real sun after being germinated and kept indoors November through end of March. Our winter brought temps in the low teens for a while with minimal sun. Unable to withstand much below 40 degrees, these were kept indoors by a large window as the only source of light. The larger tree is the original 22" tall that was kept indoors all winter as well. Photo taken late February '11. Texas Ebony (Ebenopsis ebano) at 4mos. follow the bigger tree. Interesting how this species comes into the world complete with all characteristics of older trees with it's twice compound opposite attached leaflet pairs and thorns! I've posted these and other photos at my site dedicated to Texas Ebony sp. here: http://www.lovethatkimchi.com/Texas_...sis_ebano.html Amazing nature and fun adventure. Your site is very nice indeed. I may have to try a couple to see how the do up here in the frozen north.

Ditto on your site, KM. You did your homework on the ebony, too.
I keep feeling like I should have at least one Texas ebony and one cedar elm, since I have family in Texas. But I'm still figuring out the competing time commitments to the trees I have now on the one hand, and my wife and 'tween-almost-teen daughter on the other!
