Pruning Cedars
Hey all, its been awhile since i've been on here, and my collection has grown from 10 to 50 trees. Most of my trees are deciduous, but lately i've added some conifers to my collection. My collection now includes a Cedrus Libani (not sure of the var.), and i'm having a bit of problem with pinching. I've read all of my bonsai books, googled the heck out of it, but I can't seem to find a clear answer, so I thought I would turn to my best resource...you guys (and gals). Basically, I got the cedar in winter from a local-ish garden center. It is a fairly large tree (about 28" tall) and had quite a nice trunk and surface root structure. I did some basic hard pruning to refine the shape with no issues. Now that it is spring the cedar has put out A LOT of new growth. I started to pinch the new growth yesterday, but stopped when I started thinking about pines. With pines, if you pinch all the new growth on a particular branch, you can potentially kill that branch. Is it the same with cedars? I need to get more growth at the bottom part of the tree, and so was going to pinch a lot at the top (almost all new growth), pinch medium in the middle, and none at the bottom. Any tips would be much appreciated. Thanks!
