Unknown collected tree
Hello everyone,
This is my first post here and I'm looking for some suggestions on a tree I recently collected. I dont know what kind it is but judging from the bark and buds on it I think it might be an elm of some sort or a hophornbeam. I collected it from under the stairs leading up to the deck at my fraternity house as the area has been in talks of being cleared out and no worries i got permission first. When I collected it, it had a fairly compact root system and I managed to only have to cut through 3-4 larger roots that had spread out but with plenty more large ones and lots of feeder roots remaining. As it was still dormant I mostly bare rooted it and planted it in turface. I did run out of turface midway but i got more and this tree is now potted up much higher then these pictures. I'm not sure what to do with this as most of my other trees are ficus. I would like to know if I should chop this tree down some now before it puts out new growth or wait until I see how well it responds to its new enviroment. The Whole tree ![]() Close up of the base ![]() Where I see this tree going (1/4 turn counterclockwise from above images) ![]() Here is a link to the album with more images. Love the container, too. I've been digging trees for many years, and coming up with an appropriate container post collection has always been a chore. For the first time this spring, I did exactly what you did with the milk crate...it even has handles!! Good luck with the tree,

Thanks for the compliments. There is another one in the same place that is smaller and has very a very similar trunk right next to where i dug this guy up and I might go get it this weekend .
The milk crate is actually working out great for this tree so far. Handles make moving this guy from one side house to the other for watering very convenient. And the 8 1/2" x 11" plastic fabric grid sheets i got to fill in the sides fit great, only had to cut them down along one side to get them flush. |
