I have done similar with small slits in the trunk and rooting gel. Works well I used it to earth layer a new root system further up a ficus trunk.

It works well, and match sticks are readily available, and uniform size for the drill. The reason also is the theory, that as the cambium
attempts to heal, it will do so by going along the matchsticks thus forming a longer root.

Thanks for the explanation, Pup. Has anyone been able to confirm whether it works that way in fact?
Mortalis, you refer to a rooting gel. Where did you get that, if I may ask? It sounds like it would be easy to use, more so than powders or a willow-bark slurry.

If your supplier has the powder they should also have the Gell which is in my opinion for what it is worth better to use, less wastage. Pup
