Hi Ravenna what a pearl to work on, plenty of choices. As you are aware moss that close to the trunk and nebari could cause rot in that area. I just know you will make a nice tree out of this already nice tree. Looking forward to its progress.

How are Maples as Bonsai? My wife and I both have always loved Japanese Maples and we have two in our front yard. Do they make good indoor Bonsai trees, and are they difficult to care for or need extra attention?

Well, then it appears as if I will need to work towards being able to have some outdoor Maples in the future as well. Maples are wonderful trees, I planted two this past year when we purchased our house along with some River Birch (which are native to Missouri), but I haven't done anything to them. Come spring I will post pictures of my Maples.

Yes, like Shaggy said: maples are outdooor trees. You can take them indoors for decoration for a couple of days but like other trees from temperate climates they need the changes in temperature you get with the seasons to stay healthy. The plants we keep as "house plants" are plants from tropical which need it to be warm all year round.
@ shaggy: wow, more than 100 maples I am green with envy. I guess I only have 20-25 different varieties (thinking to getting a few more but slowly space is getting tight). Most of these are still young plants though growing in my fathers garden. Due to space I tend have mostly just one tree of each variety. Which varietes do you have? |
