Crepe Myrtle
This may show up 2 times as I posted the other night and then goofed trying to get the pictures up.
Last week I was in Wal-Mart, had to make the pass through the plants just in case that "good" buy was there. I saw some crepe myrtle and one looked like it was something to work with. The price was $10.00 so I decided to pass. As I was walking off I noticed the 50% off sticker on the side. Could not let that go. I have cut it back and plan to leave it in the pot until next year. Or would it be too soon to re-pot in bonsai soil and pot now? Have A Great Day! ML |

ML--As far as timing goes I would wait until the summer heat lets up. As far as the tree itself goes, it looks like it's been sitting out on the tarmac at Wal-Mart for a little too long--hence the price reduction. I'd give it plenty of time to recover its vigor before I messed with the roots. Have you lifted it and scoped the roots? Unless it's completely root-bound I'd leave it alone.

I had planned to move this tree into a bonsai pot this spring but the budget just did not allow the one I had found on line. I found this pot in the storage room that my wife had used. Drilled a hole in it for drainage (burned up the drill bit in the process) and move the tree into it today. It is not as large as the nursery pot that it was in, but looks better. The black nursery pots are not as welcome on the deck, the trees on the deck get daily care...where the trees out back miss out at times. Since the leaves were already open I did not mess with the main root ball at all. Just remove some dirt and a few roots from bottom and sides to make it fit using the same soil.
Have A Great Day! ML |
