well i want my hobby to try and pay for itself. if i can actually make a profit all the better. i love maples, so i get seedlings fatten them up. keep the neat ones, and sell the rest. i have found it takes roughly 2 years of growing to get something big enough to resell, and 3 to 4 to turn a profit.

like i have seedlings from local trees that will be going on evil bay soon. will be sold bare root, so i can recycle the turface i have them in for next years crop. that is if they sell on evil bay. i won't get rich doing it, but mite make enough for a free tank of gas, or fertilizer. just hobby money. i don't have any start up cash to really make it a business out of it. i lost all my babies over this past winter, so i'm starting over this season.

I would have pruned them back several weeks ago, but there may be enough winter left for the cuts to scab over before the sap starts running and they bleed out. If the buds have started to swell at all I would wait for the summer doldrums to do anything with them.

Pruning them back hard--but not trunk-chop hard--should be pretty safe and might lead to some decent back budding.

Try it on one of those bloodgoods.

i think i mite just do that at the end of the month, or is there a better time to do it? i mite even do a slip pot, or minor root pruning at the same time. she's been in that nursery pot probably all her life, or damn close to it.

i have my eye on another bloodgood at my local home depot. a quick chop, and she would be a great tall pre bonsai. only problem is finding the $145 to get her. there are a few at my local nursery i'd like as well, but same problem. cash flow.
