Heat Wave!

Hi Guys,

I don't know about you, but over here in the UK, we're in the middle of a Heat Wave, up to 31 Celsius, Lots of sun, and very little wind, good for the tan, not so good for the trees.

What's the weather like where you live? Hows Australia's winter coming along Pup?

-Matt-

Here it has rained for 20 of the past 25 days. Rivers are swollen, the pond has risen to the 3rd step, the beach is under 8-feet of water (what has not washed away), but the dams are holding. My trees are still alive, but nothing to write home about other than that the keel has been laid and the ribs are up all I need to do is start the planking and decking. Hopefully the arc will be done soon so I have someplace to put all these paired animals...

It has been an odd change of climate here. We have gone from bordering on tundra to temperate rainforest in the past 5 years. Would be fun except it is too cold and wet. They say potatos will be dear this fall as hundreds of acres of them have rotted in their fields. Please send some sunny weather.

It was 109F here last Sunday. We had 4 days over 100F but the delta breezes have started up to cool us down to the 90's. Could even make it down to the high 80's by the weekend (yay). Many of my plants suffered from the heat wave. I had to work through the whole thing so they were watered in the morning but couldn't again until 11:00 at night. I don't advise watering in the dark after a tough day at work. Some things are looking very crispy when they shouldn't have been, which means I didn't water as deeply or well as I should have. Looks like I may loose a few this summer.

Welcome to Fresno Calif! 100+ the last week or so. And barely a breeze. Topped out at 109 on Sat & Sun. but we are now down to a balmy 102. Watering every morning at 7am. Trees are doing fine, but i'm melting. Oh well, it'll be this way for the next 2 months......

Unhappy Lousy!

Hi all,

Pretty much in the same situation as JL. We didn't finally break 80F until a couple of weeks ago. Our June was lousy and way below normal temps. Last week, we had a few warm days high 80's- 90F. Now we are back to below norm temps. Last few days we have been in the mid-60's F. It has been raining quite a bit as well, but not as bad as what JL is experiencing.

Mike, you only water once in the morning on 100 degree days?
We cooled down to a chilly 95 today.

Same here in Bama....98F-105F. My trees are not doing good. I have moved most of them from the deck to the shade under the pines. And the FukieTeas are still drying out during the day. I put a small tray under them today to give them some water during the day. I don't think it will cause root rot as hot as it is and I will remove the tray in a couple of days. Have lost my Redwood that was just recovering from getting too dry..now it is all brown...a few new buds are coming out...hope it will make it. Also no rain for the past 3 or 4 weeks so my 2 water barrels are dry. I am using our well water which has a small amount of salt and I know this is not good for the trees but have no choice at this time. I water in the late afternoon after work and then again early morning for the ones still on the deck.
Keep LOOkin Up!

Michael, send your rain barrels here, I can fill them in less than a day. but bring some sunshine or warmth with you. I would be happy for it to hit 65, not that much to ask. At least we have no worries about drought or need for air conditioning.

Well, a week ago today, I was living in cool, soggy southern New England where the temps were averaging approx. 10F below normal and it was raining every day. Today, I'm living just west of Atlanta, where the temps have been above average, in the mid to upper 90'sF, every day since I got here last Saturday. The trees are all parked in partial to mostly shade to acclimate to the new climate...so far so good.

It's funny, Matt: we Yanks don't think of Britain as anything other than cool and damp -- but like every stereotype, it can mislead. A few years ago, my wife took two of the the girls and flew off for a shoestring vacation in Scotland for 3 weeks, in large measure to get away from our summer heat for a bit. But that was 2003 -- they arrived just in time for Europe's worst heat wave in however-long-it-had-been! Talk about irony!

Here in the lower Great Lakes area our weather has been fairly typical, which is to say, up and down. Last week temperatures were running in the upper 80's-lower 90's F (30-32 C, thereabouts.) In the last two days we've had highs only around 70 F, and loved the relief! Today's high is supposed to be 80 F.

Rain comes every few days. In between, I have to use city water. I fill a large plastic tub and let it sit for a couple of days, in the hope that chlorine will dissipate and other chemicals will (maybe) settle out some. Don't know if it works -- any comments?
