Virus alert

Apparently a hacker has got into You Tube and left a virus on the website, my daughters laptop was infected, but has been sorted now.

Maybe leave going on there for a few weeks, until the problem is fixed.

Best regards BD Paul

Paul, for what it's worth. I spend many hours in front of computers removing virus, spyware, malware.... The fact is that most all have to have the user click "OK" or "Open" or "Run" or "Play"....much more is going on behind that one click. I try to stress to customers that "nothing is Free". I do not use UTube but from what I understand you are playing the video from there server, not downloading it to your pc, so that should be safe. But it is a file that someone has uploaded to UTube so they may have a virus and not know. The fies we upload to this site are pictures and do not have any executable to fire off and dump on the server or pc. I see many young user running the "music" share programs. I wont even start on the Legal side of them. but when you download them, kazza..sharebare...you are opening your personal computer to the WWW ! Hackers love to come in the back door of these type programs. Once you have a virus on a pc it is really hard to ever get it completely off without fdisk and reload the OS. Best defense is to keep anti-virus up to date. and setup account for the kids and all users and just give "user" rights. That way they do not have the rights to install software and it will stop (not all ) the virus and spyware from being installed as well. When you want to install something just login as the administrator. If you have worked with Vista you see it ask about every move you make, it is trying to help the user to stop unwanted install.

Thank you MI for your explanation of the You Tube operating system, and the fact is when the Run/Save option comes up, i am very reluctant to do anything except to disregard it.
My main concern was that my anti virus software has just run out, so i need to replace it with another one.
Is there anywhere on the net where i can get free virus software to use on my computer.
Try and not to get to technical, as i know very little about computers, just the basic things that you need to know.

Best regards BD Paul

You actually do download the movie to your computer when viewing YouTube, you download everything you see on your screen. It's just in a temporary folder that routinely gets deleted. For free virus programs, check out this list. I would use AVG, Avast, or Avira. I'm sure all of them will try to get you to buy something, but just keep clicking the free option.

I have seen people use the free AVG...but reread the above.
When it comes to the retail versions the 2 top hitters are McAfee and Norton ...I prefer the Norton Anti-Virus...it does everything you need without slowing you pc down too much. Stay away from the Norton Internet Security, Norton System Works or Norton 360. All are good but do way too much checking and blocking which slows you computer down. Just get the plain anti-virus of what ever you get.

Have A Great Day!

I would not use Norton if you paid me.
Hate the damn thing and it's way too invasive. I had a hell of a time trying to remove it and now I use AVG.
About four months ago I purchased a lap top and it had Norton installed on it.
As soon as I got home the first thing I did was to remove it and install AVG.

I have the full version (AVG) on my PC and the free version on my lap top as I don't use it all that much and I more or less have it as a back up computer.

Its funny how you should mention taking Norton of, as i have it one the computer, and cannot remove it no matter what i try, but then i cannot do much on the computer anyway, i have to rely on my daughters knowledge, but even she cannot figure it out.
I would be interested to find out the correct procedure to permanently remove this annoying program.

Best regards BD Paul

See....that's just what I mean!
Any program should be easily removed by a simple click of the button.
I actually had to use a special program to get rid of the cursed thing!
When one has do that there is something definitely wrong with it and I want nothing whatsoever to do with it. As I is said.....it's way to invasive.

Go into your control panel click add and remove. Follow the prompts to remove. It worked for me.
