built a shed

i'm looking for some input. it's a 10'x10'x12' with a gambril (sp/ barn type) roof. i'm going to put a table off the side for my trees.

here's my question:

i have yet to build the doors for it, and thought i'd build a drop down type of door to double as a ramp to get stuff in instead of a double door that's the norm for shed.

i have come up with 1 draw back so far. it's going to weigh a ton due to needing to be made out of 3/4" osb (flake board) it to be stiff enough for my weight plus what ever is on it's way into it. along with a 2x4 border to go with the trim i intend on putting on the whole shed.

am i nuts in doing this? i was also considering adding a counterweight via rope to help lift it. the weight would be hidden in a 4" or so pvc pipe inside the shed.

all input greatly appreciated in advance.

Maybe I display my ignorance by asking this, but could you make the door out of something else, something stronger per pound?

ok, but what? anything stronger per pound will probably be heaver. i'll probably just make the normal 2 door. my problem is that the deck is roughly 14 to 16" off the ground. yup i over built it, but that's my norm, so i'll need a ramp of some sort to get my power equipment in. sucks going from a house to the basement of my brothers house.

hey. if ya got any ideas please post them, but i think i'll just do normal swing doors.

I also am known for over-engineering when I build things. Always has surprised my dad, who is a better handyman than I to start with. (What does that tell you?)

As for other materials, I was just trying to brainstorm, maybe toss out an idea that would manage to spark something somewhere else. Sorry, but I didn't have anything specific in mind.

Just brainstorming again: have you played with the idea of a ramp that stores under the floor and slides out into position, like one sees on some delivery trucks?

Maybe I'm picturing the whole thing wrong here, but why not opt for a lighter door and simply build a ramp seeing that the entry is off the ground? If by chance the ramp would be in the way (space wise) maybe place strong hinges on the ramp so that you can raise it up when not needed. Then again, that sounds all too simple so more likely than not I don't have the correct picture in this old brain of mine.

Have a look at a trailer mounted horse box there are different kinds of spring systems to help lift heavy ramps

all great ideas, and thanks.

treebeard55

the ramp like used on u haul trucks is out due to all that needs to be done is build the door, and cap the roof. too late to put anything in the floor.

shrimpy

that's a great idea, but i'm already past my budget. i was thinking of a pulley system with weight moving inside a 4" PVC pipe, but there again funds are beyond low. i have the lumber for swinging doors.

Phil

i decided to opt for a removable ramp kinda like you are talking about. i'll be getting a set of ramps from harbor freight that are used to load a ATV on a pick up.

i'll have to post a pic or two of the shed. if the winds die down some today i'll get the roof caped, and hopefully get the front, and back painted. they are only in primer currently.

i intend on putting a table off the side for my trees. maybe even two shelves.
