Congrats T.J.Wheeler, this months winner. Please write a short blurb about your tree for Phil to post with the picture on the home page.

I bought this tree at Jade Gardens in Wimberly, Texas in late fall of 2006, and it really hasn't changed much since. I think it is around 15 years old now. This picture was taken about a year ago (right now it really needs a hair cut and some fertilizer). Its about a foot tall. I was told it would produce little yellow flowers, but I have yet to see them; I'm still just trying to figure out what conditions it needs to thrive (it is a native of Puerto Rico).
The shape of the tree and its tiny leaves are what caught my attention, but i would really like to improve the root flare. It currently looks quite silly. Thanks for voting for my tree! Travis Wheeler |

Great looking tree Travis. However, there is only one reason I did not vote for it although it may possibly just be the picture. On the bottom right of the trunk it looks as though it has a reverse taper albeit it might just be a shadow. Hope I'm wrong as I really like this tree and seems to have good potential.

Unfortunately you are quite right about the reverse taper. This picture doesn't really even show you how bad it is; three primary roots come out of the soil at odd angles at the base, and that is the one thing about this tree that really bothers me. I'm not sure what to do about it; it seems like a difficult thing that might require a bit more skill than I possess.
By the way, that is a very funny avatar you have! Travis |
