Congrats M.B. Please write a short info piece on your tree to go with it on the Home Page.

I won this little juniper at the Sacramento Bonsai Show in May of this year, for twenty dollars in raffle tickets. Which proves you should always support club raffles, you never know what you might win!
This is my first deadwood juniper so I'll need to learn an unfamiliar new aspect of bonsai: deadwood preservation. Thanks to all for voting. Mary B. |

Congratulations, M.B. A very nice tree, and quite dramatic.
The runner-up belongs to my 9-year-old daughter, whose name here is nmoor1. It was my idea to enter it in the poll; she agreed, but wondered if it was really ready yet. Maybe I should have listened to her concerns a bit more. There's a story that goes with this Portulacaria. I'm sure I posted it here before, but can't find the thread to set up a link-back; so bear with me, those of you who've already read it once! My daughter and I had a difference of opinion, when this tree first went into a bonsai pot, as to where the front should be. I had one choice; she wanted the exact opposite side. We discussed it, but didn't agree. And since I'm the parent and the one with the bonsai experience, my choice prevailed. Later that year I took the tree along to a Styling and Refinement workshop with Susumu Nakamura, at the Midwest Bonsai Show in Chicago. When the time came, I placed the tree in front of Nakamura-san and asked if he had any comments. Without a word, he reached out, took hold of the pot, and rotated the tree 180 degrees! "Make this the front," he said. "Perfect!" I listen to my daughter's design opinions a little more closely now!

Thanks Treebeard, very nice story. I too have a bit of a problem picking the right front. I hate it when I put something in a pot and look at the tree a few months later and see what I now think is a much better front. Maybe that's why I've been finding more round pots to plant in, then I don't have to really decide
