BOTM discussion
I think that perhaps I should lengthen the submission period by five days and also lengthen the voting from 10 days to possibly 12 days. That would bring us a tad closer to the end of the month and give the winner a few days to submit a short description of the tree and me a couple of days to make the Homepage module. If perhaps the tree is not placed on the Homepage on exactly the first of the month it’s not really a big issue. I’m also considering that maybe the submissions for next month’s BotM could be anonymous. I’ll work out the details with Jim and see where the submissions could be sent to. They could possibly be sent to him or me via email and then the trees would be placed here for the BotM with simply a number attached to them.
As I have said before that the ratio of members as to those that actively participate on any given forum site is usually somewhat low. Keeping that fact in mind and then considering the low ratio of those few active members that will participate in such an activity as something like the BotM makes the idea of having categories such as Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced more than a tad ridiculous at this point. I could easily entertain the idea if the membership were a few thousand but certainly not at this point in time. Hopefully in the future we’ll arrive to that point! ~Phil

The only reason I do not participate, and I'm sure its the same for other members, is because I have nothing that is presentable yet. All of my trees are in the early stages of development and are really nothing to talk about.

Dont let this put you off. There is no size or constraints. As you can see by Al's tree it is naked as as a jaybird, but, you can see the branch structure, this is what matters. I myself have a Wisteria over 20yrs old, but it is in a clay grow pot, so that lets me out as far as presentation, its only about 16inch tall but a 2inch trunk, i aint going to pull it out and repot it just for a pic. Have a go at it. Cheers.

As I said, there might very well be different categories in the future when there are more members to participate. It never hurts to place in a submission however as you might very well receive some good input as to it's styling and future progress. Also as said I might have some of the submissions remain anonymous so no need to feel bad about submitting anything you may have to offer. This site is and always will be for beginners, intermediate and advanced alike. Granted, there are a couple of sites that would not even accept a simple beginners question let alone answer it. This is not among them and never will be as long as I'm running it. Just give it a shot and see what happens! Nothing ventured....nothing gained!

I split these threads to keep the poll from becoming a discussion thread on the trees.

If we all said I do not have a tree there would be no tree of the month. No offence intended. On the other site there was one month, when it was for trees that were going though refinement and initial styling maybe next month or the near future Jim!!. I would also like to see anonymity. Ps I voted for Al's tree coz I like pictures showing nakedness

I realize that I can post a tree that is not finished but I still don't have any that are suitable. Even if I did submit I would run out of trees very quickly, although I would be getting more. I have no problem letting the more experienced growers duke it out. I enjoy seeing their trees.

I, too, don't have any show ready trees, either, though I have some that are coming along. Unfortunately, they are all frozen solid at the moment and will remain so for another 4-8 weeks, and I don't have any recent pics worth posting. I will try to participate one re-potting season is over, usually mid May.
