Please Help!

I recently rescued this tree from a pot full of mud that barely drained. After cleaning the roots and transfering it to better soil i found out that it had a white/orange ring around the trunk where it used to meet the mud. It looks like a powdery growth. I also saw a few little holes in the trunk towards the base of the trunk. My first thought was rot from bad drainage but im still not sure what this stuff is and how to treat it. Any advice would greatly help

Thats weird...it's actually kind of gross looking. What kind of tree is it? Some kind of palm?

Actually, Ganja, that looks to me like nothing more than a ring of mineral deposits that precipitated out of the water. Such deposits don't hurt anything unless they build up on the roots to the point where they interfere with the roots' function.

How's the tree's health? If it's showing no signs of distress, I would just keep an eye on it and proceed. With good drainage such deposits will eventually wash away.

Anyone else have a different opinion?

Frankly, I'm not convinced you meant the "just kidding." But since I couldn't see your face, or hear your tone of voice, when you wrote the above, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt on this post.

But you need to remember that all people see here is what you type, and any smileys you may throw in.

Good luck with your tree.

Strange as he honestly seemed somewhat sincere with his question only to turn it all around into a joke. Also, I am able to see the post he deleted and it was even more demeaning without the "only joking" at the end. Well, it takes all kinds and these idiots manage to sneak in from time to time on forums. Bottom line...........he's been banned as I'm quite sure even more of his antics would be forthcoming.

Strange Strange Person! Why do we attract the weirdos?

But for what its worth Treebeard I agree with you, it looks like calcium deposits from hard water.

I have seen the same rings.

They ARE mineral from the water.
