Thanks, I thought I was watering when needed, by using a chopstick. this is why I am still skeptical that it is a watering problem, but I will check the roots none-the-less. When I water, it does not pool on the top-soil at all, and I water until I see water running out the bottom. I give it a good drenching every time, then I wait until the chopstick is almost bone dry, but not quite. The foliage however, never has gotten to the drooping point between waterings. Do elms like to droop a little between waterings?

Yes, they do droop a little when they are going dry. What did you find out with your soil and the tree's roots?

Noissee........do you think it is "black spot" ? That is what I have been treating my for and it looks just like yours. I was told that it is caused from too much rain on the new leaves. BT had some good info about it and I had ask about treatment, then the site went down. I did write the name of "orthenex" that was to be better for elms than the products for rose bush. So far I have applied 2 times (once a week) and it has rained within 12 hours after so I am not sure how or if it is working. I still have some yellow leaves with black spots. I was told it would not go away this season, but I could slow it down and it would not return next year. Remove the leaves, do not leave then in or around the pot, it is a spore that travels through the air. but I could be wrong it may not be black spot, if so I am treating my for the wrong thing too. Also I stopped watering from above, I was told to not let the leave get wet, even remove from the rain...I leave them out in the rain.
Keep LOOkin Up!

Exclamation If you are not sure........

Mi Work,

If you are not sure what is wrong you should take your tree into a garden center. Why put your tree through unnecessary stress and possibly kill it with the wrong treatment?

Have you put pictures of your sick tree on this site? If not, let us have a look to see if we can help.

Cheryl, for what it is worth, I remember Michael's thread at BT...I believe he was receiving advice from a retired plant pathologist who recommended the treatment. If memory serves me, this man was the one who diagnosed the problem via pics, so I think he should feel pretty confidant with the course of action he described above.

Thanks Dave, and Thanks Cheryl.......I did not know the person that was giving the advice at BT as I had only been there a couple of time when I found the thread with the info. I did see the person had a couple of thousand post so I figured they must have been at this a long time and know what they are talking about or are even more confused than me. We do not have a true garden center here for such info. Bonsai Chat is my Garden Center, Bonsai Club, this is it for around here. But I thank you for the concern.
Have A Great Day!

Which one of you swabs dare to slip me the black spot!

Anyways, I have a few garden centers, as well as a local club, so I'll check it out.
Michael, feel free to post your tree on this thread if you want, I won't accuse you of "hi-jacking."

OK..is this a pirates curse? Noissee accused me of giving his tree "black spot" ..I check my trees the next day and my "trident maple" has black spots on the new young leaves!..........Not really the same but looks close. I have only one pair of scissors to prune with. I realize this could infect tree to tree...what would be the best thing to clean with between trees?
Noissee......no need to post a picture of my elm, it looks just like yours. I am continuing to treat with the orthenex as stated above. I applied the 3rd weeks spraying this weekend. One of the elms has slowed way down of yellow leaves and the other seems to have slowed down. I will keep you post and you let us know what you find.
Have A Great Day!

Best thing to clean scissors with is Surgical spirits as it steralises and then evaporates to leave no residue on scissors. phil g
